MRSA Therapy! New Guideline

IDSA (Infectious Diseases Society of America) published a new guideline this year for treatment of soft tissue infections and MRSA.

 

Outpatient treatment:

Cellulitis (Purulent) with no Abscess formation:

1. Clindamycin Adult: 300–450 mg PO TID                   Peds: 10–13 mg/kg/dose PO every 6–8 h, not to exceed 40 mg/kg/day

2. Bactrim Adult: 1–2 DS tab PO BID                      Peds:  Trimethoprim 4–6 mg/kg/dose,
sulfamethoxazole 20–30 mg/kg/dose       PO every 12 h

3. Doxycycline Adult: 100 mg PO BID                             Peds: <=45kg: 2 mg/kg/dose PO every 12 h >45kg: adult dose

 

Cellulitis (Non-Purulent) with no Abscess formation:

1. b-lactam (eg, cephalexin and dicloxacillin)
2. b-lactam (eg, amoxicillin) and/or TMP-SMX or a tetracycline
3. Clindamycin
