Today, another important study, this time published in NEJM, explores a different question: should we use sodium bicarbonate in critically ill adults with metabolic acidosis and shock?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this randomized trial, patients with severe metabolic acidosis and shock were assigned to receive either sodium bicarbonate or placebo. The bicarbonate group received infusions for up to five hours with the goal of achieving a pH of 7.30.
