Nurse Shortage and Patient Mortality

This has become an increasingly common practice nationwide in the setting of ongoing nursing shortages. While we consistently focus on protecting patient outcomes, a recent study published in JAMA from an international cohort demonstrated that nursing understaffing is associated with increased patient mortality, higher readmission rates, and longer hospital length of stay. These findings reinforce what many frontline clinicians have long suspected: staffing levels are not simply operational issues, but critical determinants of patient safety and outcomes.
