Whole Blood in Traumatic Hemorrhage

A recent randomized controlled trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared prehospital transfusion of whole blood in trauma setting with separate administration of red blood cells and plasma (two units each) to evaluate whether whole blood reduces mortality.
The study found that whole blood transfusion was not superior to component therapy in reducing mortality or the risk of massive transfusion within 24 hours.
